The whole nation still seems to be engrossed with the victory in the 100th Test. A day after the victory against the hosts Sri Lanka in the landmark Test, Bangladesh national team though started turning their focus on the ODI series, the euphoria of the victory went unabashed. The people in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) headquarters also seemed to be immersed in the victory in what was termed as one of the greatest victory of the Bangladesh.
At home, Sri Lanka was unconquered till Bangladesh beat them by four wickets. Before the defeat, Sri Lanka went undefeated in the last 17 Tests in which they won 15 and drew two matches. Bangladesh halted that streak to make the history. So the joyous mood of the nation is understandable.
Chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said their uncompromising attitude towards the team was the reason of that great result. He said they never hesitated to drop the underperformed player whatever status he holds and that’s the fact for which they reaped the rewards at last.
“What we believe that we need performer to win a Test because we badly wanted to win a Test at aboard,” he told the reporters yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. “We never compromised about underperformed players. We tried to give the chance to the performers as much as we can. And it was the thing that helped us to regroup and rejuvenate.”
“In the last seven or eight Tests, we are going with chopping and including players. That time it looked very odd but we wanted result. We stuck to our policy because we have some good players at hands. We need to bring them in the fore. And eventually that experiment paid off.”
Nannu however stressed upon the requirements of continuing that performance to make them a force to reckon with at the overseas condition also.
“We should prove that the performance is not just one-off. We need to go ahead, capitalizing the confidence we gain from here.”
While Bangladesh wanted to win an away Test against a mighty opposition to prove them they have come off age in the longer version format, their original target was to win the ODI series. In fact in the last couple of years, Bangladesh proved them a strong nation in limited overs cricket and to justify it, they need to win a series in aboard.
Another selector Habibul Bashar Sumon said that they now focused on to winning the ODI series. Terming the series would be a challenging one for them he said, “We are now at upbeat mood and we should clinch the series because it’s the format in which our players had really good track record.”
“But I don’t think it would be an easy job. Sri Lanka will be eager to win the series to put a shed on their defeat in the second Test. So they will come out all guns blazing. But if we can put our best effort, I think we would clinch the series.”
Bangladesh first Test captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy eulogized the team’s performance in Sri Lanka, stating that they should work on some areas what are remained left to do fare well further.
“We have made a significant progress. But if we look at the top-teams and their cricketing culture, then I think, we still have some more works left. We still have times and opportunity if we could do it the team’s consistency and pipeline will then be better further,” Naimur Rahman said while he came to visit the concluding ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy display at South Plaza.
Drawing a comparison between the first Test and current Test squad, Durjoy said, “We got down playing the maiden Test when every thing was new for the players. But this time most of the players are much more experienced. They all have individual distinction.”
“Our youngster players beside the senior players are contributing to the team’s cause. Many times we tell a thing that we have no bowlers to take 20 wickets but some of our bowlers are doing the same thing which impacts on the team,” he also said.
Meanwhile the Test squad players who are not in the ODI series returned home yesterday.
