Can we measure sadness? In this short life what afflicts us more? The pangs of life or the silence of death. This perplexity reminds us about the famous soliloquy of Hamlet- To be or not to be, that is the question. It is easier to ignore our sadness when we get someone with more tumult and strife in their life.
When we are lamenting for not having a car in this busy packed city with traffic jam and pollution, someone else is struggling and complaining to God for not having healthy and full-formed legs. In this situation, how can we measure the intensity of sadness? Again a person might be very troubled and sad for getting disappointment in love and not going well with boyfriend or girlfriend. But then we find another friend who is deprived of parents’ love his whole life and getting raised by relatives. So, the person having problems with love life will feel guilty in front of the orphan for cursing life so much whereas there are persons with much sorrows and miseries. Here the magnitude of dolefulness is more in case of the orphan boy who has been deprived of having great blessings from God. This would be relevant to give some instances of sad life in this world and to ponder upon the depth of sadness. Suppose, in one hand a person is very sad and frustrated for not getting a good and relaxed job and curses the present one. On the other hand, another person needs a job badly just to support his/her parents and lead a decent life. To whom will you go and console then? Another instance can be- when a young married girl gets bored of her regular routine and tough household works and needs a vacation but to no avail. The girl is not allowed to go out with her husband in a vacation just because she should be working the whole day for everyone.
On the other hand, she has a neighbor who is very happy with her husband and in-laws but is leading a very incomplete life. The lady will never be blessed with children and the couple is investing a lot of money for some cure. The couple is also taking treatment from abroad. The previous girl thinks that she is very much unfortunate for having no freedom and for not leading her own life. Whereas the second lady is so fortunate for getting respect and love from all the family members despite not having the quality of becoming a mother. But does she really feel fulfilled whenever the thought crosses her mind that it will never be possible to hold her own child in her arms and cuddle with utmost care. Among all these unfulfilled dreams and desires, and lifelong miseries, a human can get a cathartic relief by helping an underprivileged family or child, or by helping the devastated souls through motivating speech or encouragement to live life fully. I believe that our life can be productive and effectual if we can help even a single soul or a single person with poverty and troubles. We know, life is stranger than fiction and sadness can have so many colors and shade. So there is no literal escape from sadness rather victory comes by embracing sadness, miseries, and living for something new, something positive. Bearing true humanity in the mind can give path to enlightenment. Then only we can feel empathy and solidarity with all distressed human souls whether he/she is an orphan, disabled, slave, or a hermaphrodite. Almost all of us feel blue, broken hearted often but persons with serious depression and deep trauma need very close monitoring and healthy friendship. So, let us come near to those persons and spend time with them to keep them busy. Let us talk with them about hope, about life, about birth, about nature, about love, about bondage, about adventure, and about humanity.
There are two categories of sadness I can surmise of. One can give a heart breaking blow and shatter our mind and hope but with the passing of time, all heal well. But some miseries and distresses are continuous and prevalent throughout life that leads to severe depression and mental breakdown.
The first type can be exemplified by giving an instance. It is unbearable when a close person or family member leaves this world all of a sudden and we cannot accept the fact for a while. But the second type is when someone is bound to conform to some rules and orders that are harmful for him/her or a person who is a slave to someone’s else’s wish and has no self-identity. We must have a strong voice within ourselves to think about the positive sides of life and leave behind the negative happenings.
But some are too unfortunate to even get chance to think and act from one’s own. We, the ones who are in a safe and good situation than them, should utilize our life by being a mentor, guide or bold spirit for them during their hard times. We have to remember one thing that life is beautiful but also full of thorns where we can get hindrance step by step. As I can perceive, exposure to lots of people, travelling to different places, knowing people of different cultures and exploring nature can give us the urge and passion to overcome depression and trauma. I just couldn’t go on without mentioning the name of Nicholas Vujicic who can be taken as a paradigm of great tolerance, inspiration and strength. He is an Australian motivational speaker born with a rare disorder characterized by the absence of arms and legs. If you could search by his name on the internet, you will see a man with full passion and zeal motivating others through illuminating speech and by connecting to real life. So, if he can explore his life to the fullest and try to find the purpose or meaning of life instead of just complaining, then why can’t we.
His utmost desire to spread positive vibes among underprivileged or deprived people led him to write a book named “Life without limits: Inspiration for a ridiculously good life”. This book was translated into more than 30 languages. So it is time we stood up for each other in this chaotic postmodern world and say like Matthew Arnold- “Ah! love. Let us be true to one another.” This love will be for humanity, for all the distressed souls and for our own nourishment.
