MP Badi gets bail after surrender

Ruling Awami League (AL) lawmaker from Coxs Bazar-4 (Teknaf) constituency Abdur Rahman Badi yesterday secured bail after he surrendered before a Chittagong court in a case filed in 2007 over concealing information in wealth statement.
He surrendered before Chittagong Divisional Senior Special Judge Mir Ruhul Amins Court in the port city around 11am as per the directives of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The court granted him bail after the lawmaker appeared before it and sought bail, said Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury.
Abul Kalam Azad, then deputy director of Anti Corruption Commission, filed the case in 2007 with the citys Double Mooring Police Station mentioning Badi had concealed information about his wealth worth around Tk56 lakh in a statement.
The case statements said Badi, then a municipality chairman, had accumulated illegal wealth worth around Tk79 lakh.
The court pressed the charges against Badi in the case on June 24, 2008. On July 27 the same year, the Chittagong metropolitan sessions judge accepted the charge sheet in the case and ordered it to be transferred to the Chittagong Divisional Special Judges Court for further proceedings.
On February 11, Badi filed a writ petition with the High Court that stayed the proceedings of the case until the disposal of the rule.
After eight years on January 03, 2017, the HC has settled the rule and ordered the lower court to run the proceedings of the case. The HC also ordered Bodi to surrender before the court within 30 working days.
The case is now awaiting framing charge. Verifying testimonies will begin after framing charge, Advocate Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury said .
