The first council session of Bangladesh Tanti League, an associate body of the ruling Awami League, was held yesterday since its inception in 1965. It was formed with the name 'East Pakistan Tanti Samiti' first, then renamed 'Bangladesh Tanti Samiti' after independence, and finally became Bangladesh Tanti League in 2003. However, the first council session of the AL’s associate body was held at the auditorium of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB), in the capital yesterday. Engineer Mohammad Shawkat Ali and Khagendra Chandra Debnath were elected as the president and general secretary of the central committee of Bangladesh Tanti League. AL general secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of the new leadership of Bangladesh Tanti League in its first council session. A convening committee of 16, formed on Aug 8, 2003, was leading the organisation till yesterday. Enajur Rahman Chowdhury was the convener while Sadhona Gupta was joint convener of the immediate past committee. Talking to this correspondent, Enajur Rahman Chowdhury welcomed the decision of AL leadership in this regard saying the newly formed committee is good committee.
