Bumper mango yield

It is quite encouraging to note that farmers are expecting a bumper production of mango in Rangpur agriculture region this year. According to a report in this newspaper yesterday, signs of bumper harvest are evident from the formation of tender mango smoothly amid favourable climatic condition.   Farmers have reasons to become optimistic as around 90 per cent of the mango trees bloomed this season in the region. Mango is one of the prominent fruits of Bangladesh. There is no denying the fact that fruits are vital components of the daily diet and for meeting the demand for nutrition these should be included in every meal.
Bangladesh enjoys, generally, a sub-tropical monsoon climate. Due to tropical location, lush greenery, moisture-rich loamy soil and production-friendly climate, Bangladesh is one of the notable growers of a vast range of fruits. Most of these fruits perishable in nature are available in different seasons. Though mango is available in a particular season it has great nutritional value. In these days, urban children are getting accustomed to burger and other fast foods, worryingly. This is doing them more harm than good.  It is the responsibility of parents and relatives to turn children to fruit consumption. This will protect them from various diseases on the one hand and will reduce family budget on medicines on the other. Diversified use of fruits should also be ensured. A huge foreign exchange can be earned by exporting mango abroad.
There is a great environmental benefit in planting mango trees in a big way.  There are fallow lands around houses of many farmers. Those can be brought under mango cultivation. Even mango farming can be taken up on the courtyards of dwelling houses. The initial investment is not that much. The vast youth force can be employed in this task. It can solve unemployment problem greatly. A family can earn a substantial amount of money by selling mango after meeting its demand.
What is needed for the farmers now is to take proper care of their mango orchards and control pests' attacks, if any. The farmers can spray insecticides at the recommended dose for combating mango hoppers.
All concerned should put in their best effort to increase mango production in the country.    The government, particularly the ministry and the department concerned, can provide necessary financial and logistic supports to the people willing to undertake cultivation of mango and other fruits. Building of awareness can also bring the desired results.
