20 gamblers jailed in Sylhet
A mobile court in Khulna has sentenced 20 gamblers to 29 days' imprisonment each in Dakhshin Surma upazila. A team of police, led by officer-in-charge of Dakhshin Surma Police Station Md Harun-or-Rashid, conducted a drive in the upazila on Friday afternoon and arrested them from Technical Intersection while gambling, said a Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) press release.
The arrestees were later produced before the mobile court, led by executive magistrate Shahed Mostafa, which jailed them for 29 days.
Man to die for killing wife
A tribunal in Khulna on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2010.
According to the prosecution, Sheikh Mirajul alias Amanullah, 27, son of Wajed Ali Sheikh of Tungipara in Gopalganj, and his wife Hosne Ara had been living at Natunbazar of the city.
On January 28, 2010, the couple locked into an altercation over a family problem, and Mirajul, at one stage, hit his wife with a grinder stone, leaving her dead on the spot.
Nannu Shikder, brother of the victim, then filed a case with Sadar Police Station. Police submitted a charge-sheet against Mirajul on February 3, 2011.
After examining records and witnesses, Khulna Special Tribunal Judge SM Solaiman handed down the verdict.
Huge illegal foreign sarees seized
Bangladesh Coast Gaurd (BCG) Mongla West Zone on Saturday seized huge illegal foreign sarees from a truck at Rupsha Bridge area in the Khulna city.
Acting on a tip-off, a special BCG team conducted a drive adjacent to Rupsha Bridge area early yesterday and seized huge illegal foreign sarees worth about Tk 35 lacs from a truck in an abandoned condition said operation officer of BCG Mongla West Zone Lt.
Commander M Fariduzzaman.The seized goods to be handed over to Khulna Customs after process the legal steps.
Film festival begins in Rajshahi
A five-day Rajshahi International Film Festival began here for the first time yesterday aims at reviving lost glory of film industry.
Rajshahi Cholochitra Sangsad (RCS) organised the festival at Lalon Shah open stage in Pathanpara area.Drama personality and film maker Nasir Uddin Yousuf inaugurated the festival as chief guest.
With RCS President Ahsan Kabir Liton in the chair, Assistant Indian High Commissioner Abhijit Chottopadhyai, International Secretary of Indian Federation of Film Society Biplob Kumar Ghosh, Film Maker Shekhar Das, Chief Coordinator of Rainbow Film Society Mijanur Rahman and film festival director Sultanul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
More than 73 films from home and abroad will be exhibited at Rajshahi's Lalon Mancha and Borokuthi Mancha from 6.30 to 8 pm while at Rajshahi University Teachers-students Cultural Centre auditorium from 4 to 8 pm everyday. The exhibition will remain open for all till March 21.
