A day after the suicide blast at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) barrack in Ashkona, a woman claimed that the bomber was her son.
The woman was identified as Amiran, a resident of Pirojpur. “We spotted her crying in front of our barrack on Friday. She claimed that the attacker was her son, who had gone missing five days ago,” RAB spokesperson Mufti Mahmud Khan told reporters yesterday.
However, the RAB later refuted her claim. “After interrogating her, we are sure that the attacker was not her son. But we are looking further into the matter regarding her claim,” commanding officer of RAB 1 Sarwar Bin Kashem said.
In a related development, a man detained from the airport railway station in connection with the suicide attack died of suspected cardiac arrest. The deceased was identified as Hanif (35), who hailed from Amtoli upazila of Borgona district.
“We had picked him up for interrogation on Friday after getting information from a witness around 4 pm. He complained of chest pain and was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital in the city around 5:40 pm. He later died and his body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy,” the RAB spokesperson said. “The reason behind his death would be known only after getting the autopsy report,” he added.
However, a senior RAB officer said that doctors primarily informed security officials that Hanif had died of a massive cardiac arrest. “We suspect that the deceased was also involved in the attack,” the RAB officer said on condition of anonymity.
Also yesterday, the autopsy of the suicide bomber was completed at the DMCH morgue.
A three-member team led by Dr Shohel Mahmud, head of the hospital’s forensic medicine department, conducted the post-mortem examination around 11:45 am.
Mahmud said the attacker’s chest and abdomen were torn out in the blast. There was a belt on his waist and electric wire was found in the stomach, he added.
According to the forensic expert, the condition of the body clearly indicated that he was killed in an explosion. Samples from the thigh muscle, hair and blood were taken for further tests.
In another development, a case was filed against seven to eight unnamed persons in connection with the suicide bomb attack.
RAB sub-inspector Nuruzzaman had filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on Friday night, OC of Airport police station Nure Azam Miah said.
Referring to the recent militant strikes in Dhaka, city police commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah yesterday claimed that there was a political motive behind them. “The recent militant attacks were not isolated incidents,” he said, refusing to divulge further details.
The top cop was addressing an anti-militants programme at Sufia Kamal Complex in the city.
He, however, asked the people not to panic. “Police have advance information on possible attacks. We are always ready to resist the militants,” he added.
