A suspected militant was killed and two members of the anti-crime elite force, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), were injured in an attack on a RAB check-post in the Khilgaon area of the capital early yesterday, RAB said. The dead is yet to be identified. The incident took place just a day after a suicide bomber had blown himself up at a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) barrack at Ashkona in the capital and four days into a special raid by joint forces on a militant hideout at Premtala in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong that had left five suspected militants dead. Two RAB members were also injured in the Ashkona attack.
Talking to The Independent, RAB 3 commanding officer (CO), Lt. Col. Tuhin Mohammad Masud, said: “A man riding a motorcycle tried to crash into the RAB 3 check-post at Shekher Jaiga of Khilgaon around 4:35am. As he did not stop even after repeated signals, we were forced to shoot him. Two bombs were found in his bag. The bomb disposal unit later defused them We have not confirmed whether he had any links with Friday's suicide attacker. But we are seriously
suspecting that the biker too was a militant.” Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of RAB’s legal and media wing, said two RAB members were injured in the attack. The RAB cordoned off the area after the incident, he added.
Around six to seven bullet wounds were found on the suspected militant’s body. DNA samples were collected from the body for confirming his identity, said Abdus Salam, senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID’s) crime scene management unit.
Doctors found six bullet wounds on the body of the unidentified miscreant. Talking to reporters after the autopsy at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue in the afternoon, Dr Sohel Mahmud, chief of the department of forensic medicine (DFM) of the hospital, said the miscreant was killed by bullets, the marks of which were found on his body. Doctors collected blood, hair and flesh from the body during the autopsy for DNA and pathological tests, Dr Sohel said.
The sub-inspector of Khilgaon police station, Emadul Haque, who took the body to the DMCH morgue, told reporters that in the post-mortem report it was mentioned that two bullet wounds were found on the left shoulder, two on the left chest, one on the right chest and one on the right foot.
Earlier, the autopsy of the suspected militant who died when bombs being carried by him exploded at a RAB barrack at Ashkona in the city on Friday, was completed at the DMCH yesterday. Dr Sohel Mahmud told journalists that the man was killed in the explosion as a wire, belt and a tape were found attached to his body. The motorcycle was found and sent to the police station around 11:30am.
The incident took place a day after a suspected suicide bomber sneaked into the proposed headquarters of RAB at Ashkona in the capital and blew himself up.
Referring to the recent militant attacks in the capital, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Md Asaduzzaman Miah yesterday claimed that they had prior information about possible attacks. He said there is a political motive behind the attacks.
He was addressing an anti-militants programme at the Sufia Kamal Complex in the city. He said the recent militant attacks were not isolated incidents. He urged city dwellers not to panic, and added that law enforcement agencies are always ready to resist militants.
