Mother, daughter burnt alive

A young housewife and her minor daughter were burnt alive in a fire at their house at East Phulbaria village in Saltha upazila early yesterday.
Locals said the fire, triggered by electric short-circuit, broke out at the house of Sentu Sheikh early Friday, killing his wife Farida Begum, 25, and their four-year-old daughter Rabeya Begum on the spot.
Sentu suffered burn injuries while tried to save his family members, said Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Saltha Police Station.
He was admitted to local hospital.
Youth shot dead in Narsingdi
Narsingdi: A young man was shot dead allegedly by a ‘drug trader’ over playing gambling at Kajirkandi village in Sadar upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
Delwar Hossain Dipu, Alukbali union parishad chairman said Rubel Mia, 30, son of Ahid Mia of the village, had an altercation with Momen, 45, an alleged drug peddler of the area, over playing gambling around 11:30 pm on Thursday night.
At one stage, Momen shot Rubel in his neck, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was taken to Sadar Hospital from where he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Rubel succumbed to his injuries around 9:00 am on Friday.
Contacted, Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said none was arrested in this connection.
31 arrested in Narail
NARAIL: Police, in anti-drug drives from Thursday night to this morning, arrested 31 persons including four drug traders and recovered 60-gram of ganja and 1.5 liters of liquor from different parts of four upazilas in the district, reports BSS.
Sources with the district police said, Narail Sadar Thana police arrested 13 including two drug traders and recovered 1.5 liters of liquor, Lohagara police nine with 40-gram of ganja, Kalia five with 20-gram of ganja and Noragati Thana police arrested four.
The arrested persons were sent to jail after producing them before the concerned court, the sources added.
Drugs recovered in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Police, in special drives from Thursday night to this morning, arrested 38 persons including four drug traders and recovered 296 pieces of Yaba tablets, 152 bottles of Phensidyl and 1,200 liters of locally made liquor - from eight upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
