Comprehensive efforts sought for saving rivers

RANGPUR: Leaders of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) unit of the Riverine People have stressed engaging comprehensive efforts of all concerned in saving the rivers of Bangladesh, reports BSS.
They put special emphasis on creating civic awareness about importance of the rivers and essence of ensuring pollution-free rivers, which are the lifelines of ecology, national economy, bio-diversity and civilisation. The opinion came at a pre-walkathon discussion arranged by the Riverine People at Kobi Heyat Mamud Bhaban on the campus to observe the International Day of Action for Rivers- 2017 recently.
The Riverine People chalked out daylong programmes including formation of human chain, photo exhibition on rivers, rendering songs on rivers, walkathon and oath-taking ceremony to save the rivers.
Director of the Riverine People and Associate Professor of the Department of Bengali of BRUR Dr Tuhin Wadud presided over the discussion.
Varsity teachers Umar Farooque, Dr Ruhul Amin and students Shahjahan Ali, Alamgir Hossain and Ozlefa Khatun addressed, among others. The speakers called upon the common people as well as the government for becoming more conscientious in saving the rivers and freeing those from pollution.
They put special emphasis on engaging comprehensive efforts in protecting and restoring rivers, ensuring better river managements to keep those alive for improving environment, ecology, bio-diversity and existence of the civilisation.
Dr Tuhin Wadud called upon the governments of India and Bangladesh for establishing equal rights in the matters of the common and international rivers and becoming more careful in maintaining navigability and adequate natural water flow to save the rivers. After the discussion, leaders and activists of the Riverine People participated in a seven-kilometre walkathon from the university campus to the Ghaghot riverbank and took oath there for saving the rivers.
