Bird killing rampant in Jhenidah

Killing of birds has been going on in villages of the district without a care for rules and norms. In six upazilas, such as Harinakundu, Shoilkupa, Moheshpur, Kotchandpur, Kaliganj and Jhenidah Sadar, hundreds of various kinds of birds, including the Magpie, the national bird, are being killed to save vegetables growing in fields. The agriculture officer of Jhenidah Sadar thana, Dr Khan Md Moniruzzaman, said: "Jhenidah district is known for vegetable farming. We have over 500 varieties of 'kul' in orchards of six upaizlas. To save vegetables and 'kul', farmers are using electrified nets."
There are birds that do not eat 'kul' or vegetables, but they come into contact with electrified nets and are killed.
"Some farmers put up nets as high as 30 feet, which is dangerous. We tell them that the net must be five to 10 feet high at the most," said Moniruzzaman.
While visiting Katlamari, Natabere, Beradi, Kashipur and Kumrabaria in Sadar upzila and Barobazar of Kaliganj upazila and Safdarpur area of Kotchandpur upazila, it was found
that most vegetable fields have electrified nets.According to DAE sources, birds like the sparrow, dove, crow, parakeet, parrot, kingfisher, heron, cuckoo, wood-pecker, swallow, pigeon, owl, robin, martin, tailorbird and the Magpie die each day by coming into contact with the net. Larger birds, too, are killed. The convener of the Jhenidah District Animal Diversity Preservation Committee (JDADPC), Masud Ahammed Sanju, said: "We are trying to make the people aware that domestic birds are our national asset. Some of them are trying to avoid killing of birds. However, there are others who are intentionally using electrified nets for killing the birds or catching them.
Jhenidah livestock officer Hafizur Rahman said: "Random killing of birds is not good for the environment."He said steps would be taken to save the birds and also fruits as soon as possible.
The people of Jhenidah have demanded immediate steps by the local administration to protect the birds.
