Iconic all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan glorified the centenary Test of Bangladesh in his own style by slamming a ton against Sri Lanka on the third day of the second and last Test of the two-match Test series in Colombo yesterday.
He smashed 116 off 159 that studded with 10 fours before being caught by Chandimal off Sandakan. Shakib, the man from Magura, is the second highest aggregate run scorer with 3464. Tamim Iqbal led the chart with 3595 runs.
It was noticeable change in Shakib’s batting approach what he started on second day and what he showcased on third day. It was deemed to see his batting on day-2 that his departure will be a matter of time.
But it was seen a different Shakib on third day, in where he was batting with totally positive attitude. He was batting responsibly with Mushfiqur Rahim and debutant Mosaddek Hossain Saikat though he had a good luck behind his credible 100-plus run innings. He got relief four times in his stay at wickets.  When he was on 11 his slog shot went straight to Upul Tharanga but the ball bursts through his hands and into the boundary.
Then Shakib relieved from run-out chance while he was on 40. Actually Shakib was sent back when he was halfway down the pitch but Chandimal’s throw went wide.
While Shakib was on 69, wicketkeeper Dickwella failed to hold the catch though it was a tough catch.
He resumed the third day at 18 and completed his 22nd fifty off 69 deliveries with just five fours when he pushed Lakmal to deep fine leg for single. Later he converted it to century. The 29-year-old all-rounder brought up his century off 143 balls with the help of nine boundaries.
This is his first century against Sri Lanka but fifth in his 10-year-long Test career. Earlier he struck centuries against New Zealand, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. He smashed a double century against the Kiwis early this year.
He pulled together a couple of well-composed partnership en route to his credible century. He shared 92 runs with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for the sixth wicket and another 131 runs with Mosaddek Hossain Saikat for the seventh wicket partnership, which gave a 83-run lead for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh were crumbling late in the day after putting up an admirable fight for most parts when off-spinner Taijul Islam was sent to bat as the nightwatchman as a part of the experiment though it was aborted while he walked back to the pavilion being out following a review. Just six runs later, Sabbir Rahman Rumman also trudged back for 42.
Shakib Al Hasan appeared in wickets at that time while Bangladesh were 192 for four.  He opened his batting with boundary when he hit a fierce sweep into the gap between deep square and deep midwicket off Sandakan, who was then on hat-trick chance.
