A Barisal court on Thursday afternoon sentenced a woman drug peddler life-term imprisonment for possessing drugs, Rafiqul Islam, judge of the tribunal for prevention of crimes against public safety, delivered the verdict after examining 12 witnesses and other evidences in absence of the fugitive accused.
The court also fined Marium Begum Chomchom was also fined Tk 20,000 or in default to suffer six months more in prison. She is the wife of Iqbal Hossain from Kacherkhol of Mirzapur under Jhenaidah. According to prosecution story, on August 29, 2013, a team of Rapid Action Battalion on patrol in Sher-e-Bangla Road under Ward 28 of Barisal City Corporation area challenged Marium, searched her and recovered 52 bottles of Phensidyl from her possession. Sardar Ibrahim Hossain, sub-inspector of RAB-8, lodged a case against Marium with Barisal Airport Police Station on the same day.
