In a clinical show of bravery and professionalism, personnel of law enforcing agencies dealt yet another blow to the evil forces of religious extremism at Sitakunda in Chiitagong. Four suspected militants, including a woman, were killed at their hideout after a 20-hour siege. The operation, which began on Wednesday at 3pm, ended around 10am yesterday. The joint-operation, which was codenamed Operation Assault-16, was conducted by the SWAT, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) Dhaka, Chittagong District police, Rapid Action Battalion and Fire Service and Civil Defence.
While the law enforcers deserve plaudits for their action which may have saved many potential lives, one thing is quite clear–the threat posed by the fanatics is still very much present. These self-proclaimed jihadists apparently are regrouping. The previous actions against them have failed to deter these scams of the earth. Constant vigilance against these elements is essential and no mercy should be shown to those who are hell-bent on decimating innocent people for their so-called cause. They are utterly committed to their goals and have no qualms about butchering indiscriminately to achieve them. Religious extremists are pure evil for sure and needs to be defeated for humanity’s sake.
Religious fanatics are the new fascists. They are an extreme right-wing force that wants to turn back the clock of the history. The saying that one country’s terrorist is a neighbour’s freedom fighter no longer applies. The world must recognize that terrorism is a common menace and combine forces to exterminate the scourge from the region.
One of the most important ways to fight Islamist extremism is to demonstrate the importance of respect for other religious traditions and the benefits to society of developing a culture of religious freedom and pluralism. Bangladeshis have a deep culture of pluralist traditions dating back cen¬turies. We need to nurture this pluralist, toler¬ant tradition in order to develop the country. Strengthening of democratic and liberal values can act as insurance against extremist ideologies. The civil society including the pro-Liberation forces should build up a strong resistance against sectarian forces and religious extremists. Progressive forces must take the initiative to make people aware of the threat of communalism and extremism. Every citizen has a role to play in resisting extremism.
