Scholarship cheques were handed over to the descendents of freedom fighters of Dhaka region in the capital on Wednesday, reports UNB.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith handed over cheques to the heirs of the freedom fighters at a function at Bangladesh National Museum.
State Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla and a large number of freedom fighters and dignitaries attended the function organised jointly by the Indian High Commission and Muktijuddho Academy.
The Indian government introduced the Muktijoddha Scholarship Scheme back in 2006 for the descendents of Muktijoddhas (freedom fighters), said a press release on Wednesday.
The scholarships are awarded to higher secondary and under graduate students. Under graduate students get Tk 24,000 per year for four years and higher secondary students get Tk 10,000 per year for two years.
Till date more than 10,336 students have benefited and more than Tk15 crore has been disbursed to the students.
Similar events will also be held in other divisions - Sylhet, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, Rangpur and Rajshahi over the next few weeks.
