Dhaka University (DU) students yesterday staged demonstrations on the campus against the demand of Home Economics College students to declare the college as a DU institute, reports UNB.
Around 300 students gathered in front of the residence of DU Vice-chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique in the morning.
Later, they formed a human chain from the VC Chattar to Nilkhet intersection from 11am to 12:30pm. Terming the demand of the Home Economics College students illogical, they urged the university authorities not to give in to it.
They also placed a five-point demand to DU Proctor AM Amzad when he went to the spot. The demands include not allowing affiliated institutions to use DU name, logo and monogram, separate policy for affiliated institutions and separate convocation for DU students. Students of the Home Economics College went on an indefinite strike on Saturday boycotting classes and blocking Nilkhet intersection to press home their various demands, including declaring the college an institute of Dhaka University.
Students of Home Economics College staged demonstration on the streets of the capital in since Monday demanding to turn their college into an institute under Dhaka University.
They blockaded the Nilkhet-New Market intersection at around 11 am and continued till 2:30 pm at the busiest road of the capital, by stranding the vehicular movement which left the passengers to suffer immensely. The students said they submitted a memorandum to the authority of Dhaka University and education minister on 21 Sept last year with their demand. The education minister assured the students who blockaded the road on Oct 4 last year to fulfill their demand. But when they did not find any progress regarding their demands, students on March 11 this year boycotted classes and examinations.
