Recently, the China, Yunnan, Luoping Flower-sea Marathon was held in Luoping County. The line-up of 4,000 people contained an especially eye-catching team composed of middle-aged and elderly people. They were of Yunnan Hundred Marathon Running Team, recently established and showing their best in the contest for the first time.
In talking about the Hundred Marathon Running Team, we must mention Yang Xiaobiao. Without him, there would be no such group.
Yang Xiaobiao is 67 years old now, and is a famous sports lover, public welfare activity organiser and entrepreneur from Yunnan Province. Last year, after joining the Kunming Marathon of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Yang Xiaobiao had the idea to set up a running team for older people. Thus, through various channels, he found a list of 65 participants from Yunnan in the Kunming Marathon of Shanghai Cooperation Organization whose ages were over 60 for men and over 50 for women. He used various ways of contact, such as telephones, Wechat, and text messages to contact everyone and tell them his wish to set up a running team. His calls received many responses at once. Many old people from Kunming, Baoshan, Honghe came to join the team.
Of the 40-plus members of the Hundred Marathon Running Team, Zhang Wenxue was closest to running 100 marathon. At the age of 61, he has become a faithful runner after sending his daughter to the runway in 2015. In the period of less than two years, he has joined 73 full- or half-marathon races both online and offline.
In the Hundred Marathon Running Team, the oldest is He Zengtai. This man in his seventies has a very special experience regarding marathons. When he was 64, he went to Xiamen to join a marathon for the first time. In the past seven years, he joined seven marathons and joined uncountable half-marathons. However, he had never joined such a race in Yunnan. The reason is that here there is an age limit and he cannot sign up. So, he had to seek far and neglect what lay close at hand in order to join other races.
Yang Xiaobiao said, “Last year, in the Kunming Marathon of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, he broke his own record and his score reached 4.0. Afterwards, he became a target for scientific research. After the race, the Physical Examination Department at the National Institute of Physical Training extracted three kinds of body fluid for analysis. He thinks marathons are just a big folk party in foreign countries. So long as you have the ability, everyone can join, but in China there is an age limit, blocking old people from racing. So, on behalf of old people, he appeals loudly, “Marathons: please lower the threshold for older runners!”.
