The lifting of United Nations economic sanctions on Iran through the implementation of an agreement between Tehran and world’s superpowers will benefit Bangladesh as it will help increase Bangladesh’s trade and commerce, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said yesterday.
“Bangladesh cannot do business owing to the UN sanctions against Iran. Let the sanctions to be withdrawn first,” he told reporters after a meeting with European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon, French Ambassador Sophie Aubert and representatives of the United Kingdom and Germany.
The foreign secretary said that the diplomats came to apprise him of different aspects of deal reached on July 14 between Iran and United States, Russia, China, France, UK and Germany, known as P 5+1. Under the deal, the UN sanctions will be lifted in return for limiting Iran’s nuclear =capability.
Once the sanctions are lifted, it will be possible to make financial transactions with Iran, he said.
EU Ambassador Mayaudon said that the purpose of the meeting was to explain different aspects of the deal. On July 16, Bangladesh
issued a statement welcoming the deal.
Bangladesh hopes that implementation of the agreement would contribute towards peace, stability and well-being of the peoples in the region, said the statement.
