Jhenidah police face vehicle shortage

Due to shortage of vehicles police is not being able to perform their duties properly in Jhenidah.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Moheshpur police station Liakot Hossain said there is a big bordering area of Bangladesh with India. But this police station has only two pickup vans while distance from Moheshpur
town to bordering areas is over 48 kilometres. “We have to maintain smuggling, trafficking and all kinds of occurrences in the area which is so much tough. We have to wait for a long time after hearing an incident when two patrolling teams are outside,” he added.
OC of Harinakundu police station Ershadul Kabir said his station is attached with Kushtia and Chuadanga districts as many types of crimes occur in the area. “We have to use police officers’ personal motor cycles to decrease criminal activities. There are only two police pickup vans for 18 officers and 84 constables,” he said further.
Retired ASP Nazrul Islam said police department comprises of officials trained in methods of law enforcement, crime prevention and detection and authorised to maintain peace, safety and order of the community. This department is used for governing the whole society by economic, social, political and cultural policy. The police in our contemporary sense are seen as a small part of the whole of domestic government and an important agency of criminal justice system.
According to Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Jhenidah Gopinath Kanzilal, population of Jhenidah is now over 18 lakh. Jhenidah is the middle point of five districts such as Kushtia, Chuadanga, Jessore, Magura and Rajbari. On the other hand, there is a huge border with neighbouring country in Moheshpur upazila. Criminals escape from the spot very fast after committing misdoings, he added.
Besides, only 648 polices including SP, assistant police super, officer in charge, sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspectors are doing duties and responsibilities in six police stations- Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Harinakundu, Shailkupa and Jhenidah sadar -with the help of only 12 police pickup vans, which hampers the duty seriously.
According to Jhenidah police super office sources, they require more vehicles for effective functioning. There are six OCs in six police stations, 120 police officers and 522 police constables. Everyday 10 extra vehicles are needed for night patrol team in six upazilas.
OC of Jhenidah Sadar police station Biplob Deb Nath told the correspondent that there are nine police camps in 17 union parishads in Jhenidah Sadar. There are only two pickup vans for 30 police officers and 130 constables in Sadar police station.
“We have four big highways where every night we have to do patrol duty,” he added. “Even we have to use shallow engine driven light vehicles such as ‘scruters’ or ‘nocimons’ for doing duty, which so much risky for us,” he added further. Jhenidah superintendent of police (SP) Md Altaf Hossain said, they are trying their best with the facilities given to them by the government but its true that they need at least 12 more pickup vans as soon as possible.
