A Chittagong court yesterday acquitted newly elected Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation AJM Nasir Uddin, ruling Awami League (AL) lawmaker from Feni-2 Nizam Hazari and 16 others in an attempt-to-murder case. The case was filed 22 years ago by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader.
According to the prosecution, on January 24, 1993, BCL leader Sufian Siddique filed the case with Kotwali Police Station against the 18 people for allegedly attacking and trying to kill him when he was about to join a party rally at Laldighi Maidan in the city. On 7 March, 1993, police submitted a chargesheet against the accused.
Following a petition filed by an accused, the High Court later stayed the case proceedings.
However, a High Court division bench, in March 2014, ordered revival of the case. But the court order reached the Chittagong court in March this year. Later, the court fixed April 6 for resuming the trial in the case. On 14 July, closing the law-point arguments by both the prosecution and defence counsel, a court fixed July 22 for delivering verdict on the case, said Abul Hashem, Public Prosecutor of Ctg District Court.
“Out of total 12 witnesses, the court recorded deposition of eight people. There was a huge discrepancy in the deposition of the witnesses. Sufian Siddique, the plaintiff himself, said that he did not want remedy. The court acquitted all the 18 accused from the attempt-to-murder charge as the allegation brought against them could not be proven in the court,” the PP added.
