South African bowling coach Charl Langeveldt backed Dale Steyn, stating that his premier fast bowler is used to bounce back when his back is against the wall.
Steyn, considered as modern great, had relatively disappointing outing on the second day of the first Test as Bangladeshi batsmen dealt him with ease to keep him wicket-less. His figure eventually read  13-3-46-0.
“In his career there will be a lot more days like this as well. I think he is a big game player. He is a guy who bounces back. He always comes up with the goods when his back is against the wall,” said Langeveldt yesterday.
As he had a quiet day in office, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander had also less impact. Philander however got the crucial wicket of Mahmudullah Riyad to make some amend.
Still Langeveldt was pleased with the job of his fast bowler, citing they are bit unlucky of not taking more wickets.
“I am very happy with them (Steyn and Philander). They are still world-class bowlers. They put in the hard yards. They were a bit unlucky, beating the bat a lot especially with the new ball. It went past the bat of Tamim. It was one of those days. It could go your way. You could be bowling gun and get no wickets and no rewards.”
“I think Morkel was the most aggressive bowler. We were aggressive. The SG ball does get soft quickly so you need to be aggressive in your lengths and lines and attack the stumps more.”
He saw a problem lies in using the SG balls in which the South African bowlers are not much used to.
“We have been using it. We will go to India after this as well. We have to get used to it. Our guys are very much used to the Kookaburra but playing in the sub-continent you have to get used to the SG. We have been using Kookaburra around the world for a time. I think SG might not work in South Africa. It is a perfect ball for the sub-continent.”
The former Proteas fast bowler however gave the credit to Bangladesh batsmen for the patience they demonstrated.
“I think it was a really tough day. Bangladesh really batted well. They were patient. Normally they have the second highest scoring rate. I think our guys bowled really well and Bangladesh batted well,” he said adding the game is even now.
“I think it is 60-40 in their side. The game is fairly even. If they get a 100-run lead against us, we will be struggling. At the moment, it is fairly even.”
Langeveldt reckoned the second new ball could lead them to take the control of the game.
“For any bowling coach you would want more but you will take that. Tomorrow you could take two wickets up front. Both their best batsmen are in now – Mahmudullah played unbelievably and Tamim also batted well. Tomorrow could be a different story. It could be overcast. The second new ball is due.”
“Stiaan Van Zyl and Elger are part-timers so it is rewarding. If they do get wickets, it does help us. But it was the pressure that the other guys, the four main bowlers, they put them under batsmen. Sometimes you bring on a part-timer and he gets the wickets.”
Despite the spinners get a considerable help from the pitch, Hashim Amla’s decision of not using the spin of JP Duminy came as surprise.
Langeveldt said, “It is up to the captain if he wants to use JP. Harmer was bowling well so obviously they didn’t use JP.”
