The BNP yesterday extended its unconditional support to the government in its endeavour to realise due shares of common rivers.
“The people of Bangladesh are united on the issue of water sharing. There is no difference amongst Awami League, the BNP, Jatiya Party or Communist Party on the issue,” said BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon yesterday.
Addressing a press conference at the Naya Paltan party headquarters in the capital, he expressed deep concern over the Indian government’s move to implement three projects to interlink three rivers in the upstream of the Brahmaputra River.
“It is the government’s responsibility to realise fair share of common rivers water …but the BNP is ready to provide all sorts of cooperation to the government over the issue,” he said.
The BNP leader called upon the government to bring the issue across the table with the Indian government to resolve it through discussion.
Ripon, also the international affairs secretary of the BNP, said Bangladesh’s environment will face disastrous consequence if India goes ahead with its river-linking projects.
