A court here yesterday sentenced 15 people to life term imprisonment for killing a farmer at Hilora village under Mirjapur upazila of the district in 2006. The court also fined them Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer two more years of rigorous imprisonment. Special District and Session Judge Wahiduzzaman Shikder pronounced the verdict. The convicts are Ilias Miah, Shabaj Khan, Babul, Dulal Miah, Innos Miah, Bisu Miah, Ashraf Ali, Ferdous, Parvej, Liton, Sahadt, Anwar, Moti Miah, Delwar and Mansur Ali, a court official said.
The prosecution story, in brief, is that the convicts chopped farmer Tifajjol Hossain to death at the village over a disputed land on May 22, 2006.
After his death, the victim’s brother Hamidul Islam filed a case with Mirjapur Police Station against 21 persons on the same day.
Police, after investigation of the case, submitted charge sheet before the court against the convicted persons.
Later, the Judge, after examining the witnesses and evidence, found them guilty and handed down the punishment.
The judge also acquitted five accused in the case as the killing charge brought against them was not proved while another accused was discharged from the case as he died during the trial period of the case.
