Teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University form a human chain on the campus demanding the protection of natural environment and biodiversity as well as immediate closure of establishing unplanned infrastructure in the campus area. Independent photo

The teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) demanded the protection of natural environment and biodiversity as well as immediate closure of establishing unplanned infrastructure in the campus area. 

They raised the demand at a human chin formed under the banner of ‘Student-Teacher Unity Platform’, on JU Central Shaheed Miner premises about 11.30am yesterday.
They urged to the university authorities closure of haphazard construction of unplanned infrastructure, halt deforestation, put an end to the practice of setting fire to forest litter to clean up an adjacent jungle. They also demanded formulate and implement an environment policy and to draw up a master plan for the next 50 years.  
They also strongly opposed the construction of Institute of Information Technology (IIT) and Institute of Business Administration (IBA) building by filling up water bodies and cutting down trees.
These infrastructures will have to make according to the university's master plan maintaining its beauties and aesthetics, they claimed.   
Dean of Arts and Humanities Faculty Prof Mozammel Haque, Professor of Government and politics department Dr Nasim Akhter Hossain, Professor of Archeology department Dr Kamurl Ahsan, assistant professor of History department Anisa Parveen Joli, associate professor of Bangla department Shamima Sultana, associate professor of Philosophy department Dr Zahir Rahihan were took part in the programme, among others. 
Apart from, the leader and activists of different political, cultural and social organisations as well as general students were took part at the programme.
