It is quite encouraging to note that low-cost biogas, an alternative fuel for cooking purpose, became popular among the people in different areas of Gaibandha district.
According to a report in this newspaper on Saturday,
currently, around 31 rural families use biogas instead of firewood for cooking purpose. Not only in Gaibandha, are scores of people in different districts of the country using alternative energy for various purposes. There is an enormous opportunity for reducing the gradually mounting pressure on fossil fuel through boosting use of alternative energies in both rural and urban areas. With the increase in the number of population the demand for electricity and fuel is also increasing in the country.
Protection of natural resources and promotion and use of alternative energies is very important for protecting both climate and life.
The government can explore the potentials of environment-friendly biogas and solar power to address the problem greatly. This may contribute to the governments pledge to reach electricity to all by the year 2021. At present a significant number of people are enjoying the benefits of alternative energies. Alternative energies are playing vital roles including reducing the health risk of rural families, checking environmental pollution and contributing to afforestation.
Use of biogas and solar power will reduce the dependence on the conventional energy sources. This may contribute to growth of rural economy by creating employment opportunity. At present electricity is mainly produced by using gas and coal. Biogas and solar power will lessen the pressure on gas and the gas can be used in other productive sectors. While other countries face sizeable economic and social costs of de-carbonization, alongside costs linked with retiring inefficient fossil fuel-based technologies, Bangladesh can go for green economy transition by maintaining and expanding the sustainable practices that already exist.
Time has come to protect the natural resources including the wetlands and water bodies for restoring green atmosphere.
There is no alternative to inspiring and sensitizing people from all strata of life including youths towards promoting and protecting the alternative energies.
There is no point in depending on only the fossil fuel, emphasis should be given to enriching the alternative energy sources to face the energy and fuel challenges. Availability of energy from different sources is vital for the present life in meeting the challenge of the ever-increasing demand for energy. All concerned should work together for building social awareness about a judicious use of fossil fuel and ending its misuse.
