Yield, good price make potato growers happy

BSS

RAJSHAHI: Most of the growers have become happy as they got bumper yield and expected market price of the newly harvested potato everywhere in the region including its Barind tract this season, reports BSS.
Dev Dulal Dhali, deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said the farmers got bumper potato yield due to favourable climatic condition since beginning of its farming like previous two years. Similarly, they are also getting expected market price.
“We are selling potato at Tk 1000 to Tk1150 of 85 kilograms during the current harvesting season against last year’s price of Tk 700 to Tk800,” said Golam Rasul, a grower of Dainger Hat village under Paba Upazila. In the initial stage, farmers are making profit of Tk 10,000 to 15,000 from per hectares of land.
Most of the growers’ harvested better yields of potato in last two to three years and they also obtained expected sale proceeds in the harvesting stage. “I had sold out an 85-kg potato bag at Tk 750 to 800 in previous season,” said Ziarul Haque, a farmer of Baya village under the same upazila.
Abdur Rahim, a farmer of Bargachhi village, said both acreage and yield were boosted up in the wake of favorable climatic condition and availability of standard seed in the region.
This season, he along with his sons cultivated potato on around 150 bighas of land. “We are very much optimistic over our outcomes as the weather was absolutely supportive”.
Potato farming has now been expanded to the dried lands in the vast Barind tract as a result of irrigation facilities promoted by the Barind Multipurpose Development Authorities (BMDA). There has been a better position in all the farming fields predicting expected yields. The DAE had fixed a target of bringing 65,000 hectares of land in four districts during this Rabi season but the farmers crossed the official target by around 10 percent.
Agriculturist Dev Dulal Dhali said the officials, experts and other organisations concerned are extending necessary suggestions to the farmers so that the growing potato fields are not affected by any disease. Dr Ilias Hossain said BARI has been expanding cultivation of its evolved late blight disease resistant BARI-46 and BARI-53 varieties of potato at the farmers’ levels in the Rajshahi zone.
