Bangladesh team blazed to edge past Sri Lanka by 9-0 to earn the qualification of playing for fifth place in the World Hockey League Round 2 while Malaysia and China moved into the final defeating their respective opponents in the semifinal.
In the ongoing eight nations’ World Hockey League at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium, in the day’s other match yesterday, Ghana thrashed Fiji by 11-2.
Malaysia blanked Egypt by 5-0 and China defeated Oman by 5-1 in the semifinal.
Bangladesh, though earned the big win with displaying splendid performance against Sri Lanka but it was too late for the hosts as they have already been ousted from the semifinal race while they could win only one match in their group leg against Fiji and conceded defeats to Malaysia (0-3) and Egypt (1-5).
However, in the place deciding match against Sri Lanka, Milon Hossain scored three goals, Chayan and Arshad Hossain struck a couple of goals and Kowshik and Jimy joined in the celebration with scoring one goal each.
Bangladesh sounded the board in the very first minute through Chayan who converted first penalty corner of the match.
Milon Hossain opened his account in the 11th minute and added his other two on 32nd and 59th minute.
Bangladesh will face Ghana today in the fifth place play-off in the World Hockey League when they could manage sixth place after losing to Ukraine by 1-3 in the previous occasion of the competition in 2015.
Malaysia, the top favourites of the competition, predictably stormed into the final outplaying Egypt by 5-0 in the first semifinal.
Malaysia, apart from Bangladesh, scored more than five goals against their every opponents, while on their way to the final they defeated Bangladesh by 3-0, Oman by 6-1, Fiji by 11-1, 5-2 Sri Lanka and downed Egypt by 5-0 in the semifinal.
Malaysia will meet China in the final today while the former booked their final berth defeating Oman by 5-1 in the second semifinal yesterday.
