Police microbus torched in Comilla as ‘it kills youth’
Local people torched a microbus carrying policemen at Balutupa in Sadar upazila as a youth was killed being hit allegedly by the vehicle yesterday morning, reports UNB.
Witnesses said a white microbus carrying four cops of Sadar North Police Station hit the motorbike of the youth while chasing it, leaving him dead on the spot.
Being aggrieved, locals encircled the policemen and set the microbus on fire.
Later, a team of Kotwali model police station rescued the policemen and brought the situation under control. A fire fighting unit came in and doused the flame.
Police rescued the body of the unidentified youth from a field.
However, Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Police Super of Comilla said, police chased the motorcyclist as he didn’t stop his bike as per police instruction.
The biker lost his control during the chase and hit a tree which left him dead on the spot, he said.
Man gets life term for raping daughter-in-law
Natore: A court here on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for violating his daughter-in-law in Lalpur upazila in 2007, reports UNB.
The convict is Jamal Hossain, a resident of Narayanpur village of the upazila.
According to the prosecution, Jamal violated his daughter-in-law, Saima, in the absence of other family members in their house on May 21, 2007.
Later, Sima filed a case against Jamal.
After examining all the records and witnesses, Natore District and Sessions Judge Rezaul Karim handed down the verdict.
Two ‘robbers’ arrested
Bagerhat: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive have arrested two suspected sea robbers from Pargabindapur village in Rampal upazila, reports UNB.
Tipped off that a gang of hoodlums was taking preparation to commit robbery at Pargabindapur village in the afternoon, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there, said Additional Superintendent of Police M Enayet Hossain Mannan, company commander of RAB-6 of Khulna.
During the drive, the Rab members arrested M Billal Sheikh, 19, son of Kuddus Sheikh of Kain Nagar village in Mongla upazila, and Abdul Khaleque Sheikh, 60, son of Abdul Gafur Sheikh of Pargabindapur village, while their other cohorts fled the scene sensing the presence of the law enforcers.
Later, RAB members recovered two pipe guns and nine bullets from Siddherchar of the Sundarbans under Mongla upazila following the information of the two arrestees.
Polythene seized in Munshiganj
Dhaka: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard seized 2900 kilograms of polythene from Mawa Launch Ghat in Lohajang upazila of Munshiganj on Wednesday night, reports UNB.
Tipped off, the members of coast guard carried out a drive at the launch terminal around 11pm and seized the consignment of polythene in abandoned condition, said sources at the coast guard.
