Farmers urged to cultivate less water consuming crops

BSS

RAJSHAHI: Agricultural scientists and extension officials at a training session urged the farmers to cultivate less-water consuming crops to minimize the gradually mounting pressure on ground water, reports BSS. Large-scale promotion of less-water consuming crops could be the effective means of mitigating water-stress condition in the drought-prone Barind area.
The observation came in a daylong farmers training on “Less-water Consuming Crops and Conservation Agriculture Technology in Barind” at Badalgachhi Farmers Training Center in Naogaon recently.
On Farm Research Division (OFRD) under Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) organized the training with financial support of ‘Sustainable Crop Management Innovation for Drought-prone Barind Region to Face Climate Change Project’ and Climate Change Trust Fund.
Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) supported the training where 60 grassroots farmers attended.
BMDA Chairman Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension Sotyabrata Shaha addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Dr Shakhawat Hossain, Senior Scientific Officer of OFRD (Barind Centre), in the chair.
BMDA Executive Engineer Shariful Haque, Assistant Engineer Harunur Rashid and Upazila Agriculture Officer Hassan Ali also spoke.
Dr Akram Chowdhury said emphasis should be given to the promotion of less-irrigation consuming cereal crops instead of depending on only Irri-Boro farming in Barind area to lessen the gradually mounting pressure on underground water. He referred to various research findings and mentioned that there are enormous scopes of increasing the acreage of various low-water consuming crops like wheat, black gram, sesame, lentil, maize and mugdal in the high Barind tract.
