My dog was walking towards his corner, as he does after he's finished and done for the day, when I put my leg in the way. He stopped and didn't move a muscle. He waited and waited without giving me a glance, till fed up with his infinite patience I moved my leg away and he walked onto his bed, curled up and went to sleep.
How I wish I had that kind of patience, and yet those who do develop such achieve much don't they?
A fable tells about two birds, each in a cage with food and water. One bird rebelled against his conditions, rejected the food and kept knocking his head against the cage door. A few hours later, he died of his injuries. The other bird said, "Nothing's worth dying that way. Let me enjoy the food and water and be grateful for the little space in which I can fly."
At the end of the day, the master came to free both birds.
But only one was ready and able to enjoy freedom while the other lost it once and forever.
I guess we often feel trapped in a cage. Closed doors might be health problems, job difficulties, financial limitations, feelings of rejection and insecurity, marriage troubles, inability to meet your life partner, whatever.
If we focus on the closed door, we will eventually act like the poor bird which died, but if we enjoy our life the way it is granted, we will eventually be freed. In such situations, it is good that one should hope and wait quietly.
In case you find this a bit serious, here's something light:
A cop was patrolling at night in a well-known spot known for " couple parking, and where he arrested any couple below the legal limit of eighteen.." He saw a couple in a car with the interior light on. He got closer to the car and saw a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine, and a young woman on the rear seat, knitting. Puzzled by this situation, the cop walked to the car and knocked on the window.
The young man lowered his window... "Yes, officer?"
"What are you doing?"
"Well, isn't it obvious? I'm reading a
magazine."
Pointing toward the young woman, the cop asked, "And her, what is she doing?"
The young man shrugged. "I believe she's knitting a pullover."
The cop was totally confused. A young couple alone in a car at night... and nothing obscene happening!
"What's your age, young man?"
"I'm 22, sir."
"And her, what's her age?"
The young man looks at his watch and said, "She'll be 18 in 20 minutes..!"
Well, well, well! If this ain't patience, what is?
