AFP, BUENOS AIRES: Footballers in Argentina on Wednesday ended a strike over unpaid wages that has forced matches to be suspended for nearly a week, the sport's governing body in the football-mad country said.
Players agreed a deal to end the strike during talks hosted by the labour ministry, meaning first division games will resume from Thursday, the Argentine Football Association's spokesman Miguel Hirsch said.
The Argentina Footballers' Union (FAA) said some players have not been paid for four months because the state had failed to redistribute broadcasting revenues to their clubs.
The strike paralysed the league which was due to restart for the year on March 3. Only amateur matches were played last weekend.
The government paid out $22 million to try to avert the strike but the union said that was less than half the debt owed to the clubs. A management crisis in the AFA has for months disrupted Argentine domestic football and the national team, currently ranked number one in the world by FIFA.
The row has sparked criticism of the AFA by the likes of Argentina great Diego Maradona.
