Admitting that it has not been possible to uproot militancy from the country, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque yesterday said the anti-militant drive will continue to free the country from the menace, reports UNB. “Militant activities remain under control although those couldn’t be fully rooted out. Vigilance has already been intensified to eradicate militancy from the country,” he said.
The IGP was addressing a press conference arranged at the Police Headquarters to inform the media about the upcoming police conference to be held in the capital.
“We’ve already detected networks of militants while carrying out investigation in connection with cases filed with different police stations over militant activities. And we’ve successfully conducted 6-7 anti-militant operations,” Shahidul said.
Terming militancy and terrorism a ‘global problem’, the police chief said Bangladesh is yet to get rid of this menace.
He also underscored the need for ensuring coordination, assistance and sharing of experiences among the law enforcement agencies of neighbouring countries to contain, saying there are similarities in the nature and characteristics of offences in the region. About the Chiefs of Police Conference of South Asia and Neighbouring Countries on Regional Cooperation, he said the aim of the meeting is to find out ways to curve violent extremism and transnational crime and prevent militancy and terrorism through cooperation and coordination among the law enforcement agencies in the region.
The three-day conference will begin in the city on March 12 (Sunday) where chiefs of police and law enforcement agencies of 14 other countries -- Afghanistan, Australia, Bhutan, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Vietnam -- are expected to take part in it, the IGP said.
