SC to hear BGMEA petition Sunday
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday fixed March 12 (Sunday) for hearing on a petition filed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) seeking three years time to relocate their 15-storied complex at Hatirjheel in Dhaka, which has been ordered for demolition.
The three-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by chief Appellate Division, headed by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, fixed the date for hearing on the petition.
Meanwhile, a Supreme Court lawyer yesterday sent a legal notice asking the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK)
chairman to take steps in seven days to demolish the BGMEA building.
Advocate Manzill Murshid, who is also president of Human Rights for Peace Bangladesh (HRPB), served the notice asking the RAJUK chairman to take measure to demolish the BGMEA building in accordance with the apex court verdict. If the RAJUK chairman fails to take any step to demolish the building, a contempt of court case would be filed against him, the
notice said.
It also said that the Supreme Court on June 2 last year upheld a High Court order for demolishing the 15-storey BGMEA complex in 90 days. The apex court released the full text of the verdict on November 8 last year, in which it asked the BGMEA authorities to demolish the building immediately, according to the notice.
The apex court verdict also asked the RAJUK authority to demolish the illegal building in 90 days, if BGMEA would not demolish the building. The deadline of 90 days for RAJUK has already expired on February 28 this year, but RAJUK did not take any steps in this regard which is tantamount to disrespect and contempt of the court, the notice said.
