Modernising Khulna sewerage system
Tk 1,300 cr project undertaken
The project will be completed in three phases by 2030 beginning in 2019

KHULNA: The Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (KWasa) has taken a mega project involving Tk 1,300 crore, aiming to modernise the sewerage system of the city, reports UNB.
The project will be implemented with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The feasibility study and design of the project has already been completed. Sources said the project will be completed in three phases by 2030 beginning in 2019.
Once the project will be implemented, Khulna city will be known as the most modern city.
Sources at Khulna Wasa said the authorities concerned took the initiative to modernise the sewerage system of the city in 2015. It completed the initial work of the project with the help of ADB in April,2016 and sent Development Project Proforma (DPP) to the Ministry concerned for approval.
A 300 kilometer sewerage line will be set up while 12 pump stations and three treatment plants at Labanchara, Aronghata and Doulatpur in the city will be constructed under the project.
Water refined by the three treatment plants will be discharged into the river while the wastes will be used for producing fertilizer and filling up the low lying areas.
KWasa sources said some 30 percent city dwellers will not get the facilities of the modern sewerage system due to narrow roads and manual system will be introduced to bring them under the project.
Mohamamd Abdullah, managing director of Khulna Wasa, said, The primary works of the project have already been done and the proposal for land acquisition will be sent to the ministry soon. Well take the next step after getting approval from the ministry concerned.
Chief Planning Officer of Khulna City Corporation Abir-Ul-Jabbar, said, The project taken by Khulna Wasa is a good initiative but coordination among KWasa, the city corporation and Khulna Development Authority is needed for proper implementation of the project.
