Man to die for killing in Rangpur

RANGPUR: A court yesterday sentenced a man to death for murdering an adolescent in village Khamar Kursha under Mithapukur upazila about 22 years ago, reports BSS. 

Additional District and Sessions Judge of Rangpur Court-2 Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict in absentia of the convict. The absconding convict is Shafi Uddin of the same village. 
The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000 or in default, to undergo more one year jail term, for injuring another woman in the same incident, said Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Akhteruzzaman Polash. 
According to prosecution, Shafi Uddin stormed into the house of Solaiman Mian of the village in the evening on July 12 in 1995 with a view to kill him following long-term enmity over land dispute. 
But, in absence of Solaiman, Shafi Uddin chopped other inmates with sharp weapons killing Ambia Khatun, 13, daughter of Solaiman Mian's elder brother Amin Mian on the spot and injuring Asma Khatun, wife of Solaiman. Solaiman Mian filed a murder case accusing six persons, including Shafi Uddin, in this connection.
