Govt to improve housing for FFs, disadvantaged groups

UNB

Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya yesterday said the government will raise the height of around 60,000 houses belonging to freedom fighters, poor people and widows, located on low land of 19 flood-prone districts.
The minister came up with the announcement at a press conference marking 'National Disaster Preparedness Day-2017'.
The day will be observed across the country tomorrow with the theme "A constant state of preparation against disasters will bring sustainable development", reports UNB.
The government purchased a large quantity of cloth worth Tk 60 crore to construct makeshift tents immediately after natural disasters, he said, adding that 'Mujib Killa', a special tower, will be built in 40 districts so that people can take shelter in those structures after floods and similar disasters.
Maya said some 30,000 voluntaries were prepared to ensure quick services to the city dwellers after natural disasters while some 15 lakh scout members and five lakh youth voluntaries of Red Crescent were trained to respond in a natural disaster.
Mentioning that some 450 people were killed in lightning strikes last year, the minister said some 10 lakh palm trees will be planted across the country to resist thunderbolts to reach the ground. The decision was taken following a directive by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.
Maya said the government will build houses for landless women and members of the Baul community. He also announced that the government would provide 10,000 solar panels to the Bede (gypsy) community to give them access to electricity.
