Two minor children were brutally hacked to death by their father early yesterday at Gainkata village in Chokaria, Cox’s Bazar. Their mother was also attacked and injured by the disgruntled father.
The deceased were identified as son Zamal Hossain, 6, and daughter Tanzina Moni, 3. Their mother Shayra Khatun, 35, received stab injuries.
Police said the father, Mohammad Kashem, 48, ‘came from Myanmar’.
When contacted, Zahir Uddin Ahmed Babar, chairman of Harbang Union Parishad, said, “Kashem is a Rohingya and has been living at Gainkata village for five years. He started living in a rented house and later, he bought a land in the area.”
“He used to take drugs. He was drunk when he killed his children. At first, he slaughtered three goats, and then indiscriminately stabbed his wife. While his son Zamal Hossain started crying, he killed him and later, hacked to death Tanzina, who was asleep,” added Zahir.
When contacted, Provas Chandra Dhar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station, said Kashem indiscriminately stabbed his wife Shayra Khatun. “She took refuse at a neighboring house to escape his husband’s wrath. In the meantime, Khasem killed his two children by splitting their throat,” he added.
“We have arrested Kashem with the help of the local people,” the OC said, adding that the tragic incident might have taken place due to family feud.
