Rains have started slowing down across the country after a strong spell of Shraban rain that had soaked the country since last Friday.
There are only drizzles, without the heavy rains of last week, and it is likely to continue in this form from today until Thursday.
The rains would increase again, causing heavy downpours from Friday with the intensity of rains going up and down, driven by the clouds flowing from the Bay of Bengal towards the Himalayas under the influence of a fairly active Monsoon over the entire country.
A westerly low over Bihar in India is also contributing to the situation, stoking up the monsoon, a meteorological department source said yesterday.
Meanwhile, all the major river systems of the country have experienced rises. The Ganges-Padma river systems may rise further in the next 48 hours. However, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the rain fed Surma-Kushiyara systems may fall during that time, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said in its forecast for the country’s rivers yesterday.
The Khowai River at Ballah in Habiganj continued to flow 74cm above the danger level (DL), the Kushiyara at Sheola in Sylhet rose by 16cm yesterday, leaving the river up above its danger level by two cm.
Down to the south west, the Kobadak River, fed by heavy rains upstream, was flowing 41cm above DL, rising by three cm at Jhikargacha in Jessore, the FFWC said.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department, yesterday’s maximum temperature in the capital was recorded 30.7 Celsius while the minimum was 25.2C. Light to moderate rain or thunder showers are likely to occur over the area today and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, said the Met Office. Relative humidity recorded in the capital yesterday at 6:00pm was 89 per cent as the city and the adjacent areas received a total of 30mm rainfall.
