Hundreds of people from all walks of life yesterday paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to mark the 46th anniversary of his epoch-making speech of independence on historic March 7 in 1971, reports BSS. They thronged Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Dhanmondi Road-32 at 7 this morning and paid deep homage to Bangabandhu.
The day began as Awami League hoisted the national and party flags atop the Bangabandhu Bhaban and party offices. Later, they placed wreaths at Bangabandhu’s portrait on Bangabandhu Bhaban premises here in the morning.
AL Advisory Council members Tofail Ahmed and Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, Presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury, General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, AL Joint Secretaries Dr Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, Organizing Secretaries Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Majbah Uddin Siraj and Enamul Haque Shamim, Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, Deputy Public and Publicity Secretary Amirul Islam Amin were present, among others.
AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said no faith in Liberation War deter BNP from observing the historic 7th March.
“Observance of historic March 7 is a matter of values, spirit and ideology. BNP does not accept history rather if they come to power they want to create history as per their will,” Awami League and its associate bodies arranged different programmes including doa and milad mahfil, concert, procession, painting competition and discussion.
On this day in 1971, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in his historic speech at a mammoth rally in the then ‘Race Course Maidan’, now Suhrawardy Udyan, in the city directed the freedom-loving Bangalees for waging a decisive struggle against the Pakistan occupation forces.
In his 19-minute extempore speech from 4.23 pm before millions of people of former East Pakistan, Bangabandhu in unequivocal term said, “We spilled our blood...we are ready to shed more blood, the people of the country shall be freed, Inshallah!”
Well before 6.30 in the morning, hundreds of people from all walks of life converged on the streets surrounding Bangabandhu Memorial Museum from different city localities. Carrying banners and placards and chanting full throated slogans like “Joi Bangla....Joi Bangabandhu”, leaders and workers of Awami League, its associate and likeminded bodies, other socio-cultural-professional organisations thronged the eastern and western entry points of Dhanmondi Road-32 for their turn to place wreaths and flowers at the portrait of Bangabandhu.
On the occasion, different political parties, socio-cultural-professional bodies placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu.
The organisations which placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu included Dhaka City AL South and North units, Awami Juba League, Mohila Awami League, Krishak League, Awami Swechchasebak League, Jubo Mohila League, Jatiya Sramik League, Chhatra League, Jatiya Sramik League, Bangladesh Krishok League, Bangabandhu Parishad, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, Amra Muktijoddhar Sonthan, Joy Bangla Sangskritik Okkyo Jote, Bangabandhu Gobeshona Parishad and Bangabandhu Adarsha Mulyaan O Gebeshana Parishad.
To mark the day, Dhaka City AL North and South unit jointly organized a discussion at Engineers’ Institute auditorium here at 3 pm with AL North unit president AKM Rahmat Ullah in the chair.
AL Advisory Council member Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, AL general secretary and also the Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam, AL Environment and Forests affairs secretary Delowar Hossain, AL City South president Abul Hasnat and general secretary Shahe Alam Murad, among others, addressed the meeting.
