Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club had the last laugh in the goal-galore encounter when they slammed twice in last three minutes to down a spirited Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra 4-3 in a crucial Bangladesh Premier League match.
Reigning champions and league leaders Sheikh Jamal led the first half 2-1 in this closely contested match
at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital yesterday.
Ashraful Karim Linkon blasted the match winning goal in the injury time to bring Jamal’s collection 39 points from 16 matches. By virtue of this defeat Russell fell far behind Jamal in the title race earning 29 points from 15 matches.
Landing Darboe initiated the scoring for Jamal in the seven goals thriller in the 12th minute when he snatched the ball from defender Sohel Rana before crossing it for Landing Darboe, who made no mistake to beat Russell goalkeeper (1-0).
Russell hit back just after 11 minutes with Jahid Hossain equalising the margin, as the match turned into an exciting affairs. Jahid made a cool finish off a long pass from Ekanga almost from midfield (1-1).
Though it was very tough for all to control the ball and also to keep balance in the rain marred dodgy ground and the beauty of a giants’ combat hampered very often though the gamee was alive up to the final whistle.
Jamal again went ahead through Emeka Darlington when he leapt high into the air to make a perfect header into the net on 39th minute (2-1).
The excitement of the high voltage match exhilarated right from start of the second half when Kingsley Chogozie made the tally (2-2) inside fifth minute. This time a free kick of Waly Faisal found Ekanga’s header inside the box but his weak header was not well enough as, Kingsley nodding it home from close range on 55th minute.
After squaring the margin Russell controlled the play most of the time and also took a 3-2 lead when their Bosnia and Herzegovina forward Ibric volleyed past the Jamal goalkeeper Shahidul Sohel on 85th minute.
But the reigning champions looked more hostile to take the last chance to defend the solo lead scoring two more goals in the last five minutes when Wedson
scored the equaliser on 89th minue (3-3) and Linkon sealed the victory in the second minute off four minutes injury period (4-3).
GOALLESS DRAW
Title aspirants Abahani Limited fell back further from the title race as they managed to share points with Brothers Union in the other match of the day. The match ended in a goalless draw.
Abahani were now in second place with 31 points from 16. Brothers closely followed them with 29 from 16 matches
