A teacher, lawyer and a businessman will be contesting the Comilla City Corporation (CCC) election on March 30, according to the affidavit of the candidates posted on the Election Commission's (EC's) website.
Five mayoral candidates, two of them women, are in the fray. One candidate has cases against him, while two have studied up to the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) level.
Although there is no benchmark about the educational qualification of a candidate for fighting elections, it is expected that one should be more qualified and have a clean image.
The city corporation poll is being held under the political banner. The Awami League (AL) has picked Anjum Sultana Sima as its mayoral candidate, while the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated Monirul Haque Sakku to contest for the post.
Monirul Haque has passed the SSC exams and has an anti-corruption case and an income-tax case against him. Earlier, there were 10 cases, including one involving murder, but he was acquitted on all charges.
Haque happens to be the wealthiest candidate in the polls, his affidavit said. He has a cash amount of Tk. 87,77,306 in his name, while his wife has Tk. 55,86,523. He has Tk. 87,101 in the bank and Tk 2,00,000 in savings certificates. He also gets Tk. 72,000 every year as rent from house/apartment/shops or others.
Besides, he has non-agricultural land in his name in Bashundhara (three katha), Madhumati (five katha), Swadeshand (10 katha) and Badda (three katha). His wife also has land in her name.
A former CCC mayor, Haque has under construction shops and flats of 4,690 square feet in his name.
His wife has three commercial shops at Cell Nisa Tower. The Awami League nominated candidate, Anjum Sultana Sima, is a teacher at the Comilla Modern School and has Tk. 50,000 cash in her name and Tk. 4,37,500 in her husband’s name, according to the information submitted to the Election Commission.
She has Tk. 46,08,044 deposit in bank and Tk. 20,00,000 as postal or savings certificate. She has 10 decimal non-agricultural land in her name and 20 decimal in her husband’s name.
The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal candidate, Shirin Akhter, has passed the SSC exams and is a seasonal business person. She has Tk. 3,20,000 in cash, while Tk. 50,000 as bond and has 30 bhori of gold and 10 decimal of agricultural land.
The Progressive Democratic Party's (PDP's) candidate, Soyebur Rahman, is a lawyer and his annual income is Tk. 1,80,000 and he has Tk. 1 lakh in cash and Tk. 2 lakh in the bank.
Independent candidate Mamunur Rashid has a medicine business. He has Tk. 1 lakh in cash and Tk. 2 lakh in his wife’s name. He earns Tk. 3.20 lakh from house rent. He has 11 decimal of agricultural land and 60 decimal of non-agricultural land.
