Abdullah Al Mamun’s ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ at BSA today

Theatre (Bailey Road) will stage the 179th show of its highly-acclaimed production ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ today at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital. Directed by late theatre personality Abdullah Al Mamun, ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ is one of the masterpieces by prolific writer Syed Shamsul Haq. The production had its debut in 1976 and played an important role in the neo-theatre movement of Bangladesh. The play was recently redirected and designed by Sudip Chakroborthy.
‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ is the first production of the country which had many shows in and outside of the country and earned international awards. In March, 1981, the production went to Seoul to participate at the World Drama Festival. Under the direction of late Abdullah Al Mamun, it earned much appreciation and turned into one of the most significant plays in the late seventies.
Based on a story of a village, ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ zooms in on the brutal genocide and rape by the Pakistani occupation forces during the Liberation War in 1971. The play also focuses on the ignorance, superstitions and misuse of religion that prevailed in the rural society. Apart from sketching the victory of Bangladesh, the play also urges the need to be free from superstition, domination and discrimination to build a secular society.
The probable cast of the play includes Ferdousi Majumdar, Keramat Maola, Paresh Acharya, Tropa Majumdar, Khurshid Alam, Maruf Kabir, Tofa Hossain and Atikur Rahman in lead roles.
