Left arm quick Mustafizur Rahman gave an answer to the critics who were skeptical about his success in the longer version cricket. After making some remarkable history in the ODI cricket, he was unfolded into the Test cricket as the team management wanted him to replicate the success. Both the skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and coach Chandika Hathurusingha termed him as the ‘gem’ and believed he could stun the opponents in the longer version cricket as well. His bowling figure in the first innings which read 17.4-6-37-4 provided the evidence that he paid off the belief on him.
He just missed a hat-trick to be the fourth bowler in the Test cricket to achieve the feat on debut but his effort ensured Bangladesh would be a happier side after the day one. England Maurcie Allom (against New Zealand in 1930), New Zealand’s Peter Patherick (against Pakistan in 1977) and Australian’s Damien Fleming (against Pakistan in 1994) are the three bowlers to have hat-trick to the name on Test debut.
His bowling figure is the second best amongst the Bangladesh pacer on debut. Monjurul Islam, another left arm pacer like him held the record of six for 81 against Zimbabwe in 2001.
No bowlers of Bangladesh had taken three wickets in an over on his debut Test.
Despite missing yet another milestone, he prioritised this performance more than the ODIs saying, “If you want to pick up my best, I will term this performance as my best. In ODI cricket, the batsmen would give you the opportunity to take wickets and you will be rewarded if you maintain a channel in bowling but in Test cricket, you have to earn the wicket by bowling well.”
As Hashim Amla and Temba Bavuma seemed to have gone in right direction in post-tea session after South Africa were 136 for three, Mustafizur sparked a collapse, taking three wickets in just four deliveries. Amla was his maiden Test wicket with an edge behind on 13, and JP Duminy was hit on his front pad next ball for a duck, and didn't survive Bangladesh's video appeal. Quinton de Kock blocked
the hat-trick ball, then was late to the next one and lost his off stump.
He seemed not to be disappointed to miss the hat-trick.
“I have tried my best but the batsman played really well,” said the 19-year old who revealed the Amla’s wicket gave more pleasure than other wickets.
He created a sensation with his menacing off-cutter which proved to be decisive in demolishing Indian much-vaunted batting line up but he was not seen trying much to offer this delivery to the batsman in the Test on day one.
He explained: “In one-day I normally tried to give two or three off-cutters in an over but here I tried off-cutter after two or three overs because here batsmen were not in hurry.”
