Galle memory inspires Bangladesh

Last time when Bangladesh played a Test against Sri Lanka in Galle compiled a staggering 638, their highest and only 600 plus total in the Test history. That too they did without their two best batsmen—Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. Shakib was in his post-operation rehabilitation while Tamim Iqbal didn’t play the Test because of the injury.

Sri Lanka were armed with the legendary batsmen like Kumar Sangakkara, Tilkaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews but Bangladesh came out with a proud draw and the only time they avoided any defeat against Sri Lanka at Lankans own den.
Mushfiqur Rahim scored a double century as the first Bangladeshi batsman in that Test while Mohammad Ashraful played a brilliant knock of 190. Nasir Hossain also hit a century in the Test as Bangladesh took a 68 runs first innings lead, overcoming Sri Lanka’s mammoth total of  570-4 dec.
With Shakib and Tamim playing the match unlike the last time and there is no Sangakkara, Dilshan or Mathews, Bangladesh could hope for the best in the Test, believed the cricketers.
Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain Rangana Herath also played that match and was at the receiving end. He ended with a figure of 61-11-161-2, a figure that didn’t justify how threatening bowler he is always at his own soil.
The memory is vivid in Herath’s mind as well, as he recalled the past, “I clearly remember what they did in that Test. Mushfiqur made 200, Ashraful 190 and Nasir had a century.
They were not bogged down even though we amassed 570. They came out with the draw and next time we won the Test in Colombo to ensure the series.”
Herath is sure that Bangladesh would put up lot of pressure on them this time around, specially when Sri Lanka fielded almost an inexperienced side.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim also cherished the memory in Galle, a place in which he achieved his personal best.
“That was quite an experience. We pushed Sri Lanka hard despite they were armed with the batsmen like Sangakkara, Dilshan, Mathews and other.
This time they are not in the team, so logically we should do well because we are getting back our two best players Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal who were not in the team last time when we played in Galle,” Mushfiqur said adding that they are upbeat about their chance this time around.
Bangladesh so far played 10 Tests in Sri Lanka, out of which they lost nine Tests.
