Man commits suicide
A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a scarf at his house at Uttara in the capital on Monday following a family dispute.
He deceased was identified as Gazi Mazharul Islam, a resident of Uttara Sector No 13. He was a lawyer of Gazipur District Judge Court.
According to Inspector Mozammel Haque, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, the relatives of the victim claimed that the Mazharul committed suicide by hanging himself with the scarf of his wife Beauty Akter following a quarrel with her.
They said Mazharul and his wife engaged in quarrel over his second marriage on Monday.
At one stage, he entered a room and closed the door and hanged himself around 8am. Family members broke the door as they did not get any response from inside of the room, police said.
He was rushed to the DMCH in critical condition. But the on-duty doctors declared him dead around 1:30pm. The body was kept at DMCH morgue for autopsy.
Woman killed in road crash
A passenger bus knocked down a 45-year-old woman in Pragoti Sarani area under Vatara Police Station yesterday in the capital,police and hospital sources said.
Duty officer of the police station Swapna confirmed the BSS that the woman Jarina Begum, 45, suffered fatal injuries as the bus hit her while crossing the road. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where attending doctors declared her dead at about 12.30 am.
Jarina Begum was heading toward her village home in Sadullahpur upazila of Gaibandha district while the accident took place.
Police said they seized the bus and sent the body to hospital morgue.
Man held with heroin
RAJSHAHI: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested a man along with 100 grams heroin, worth Tk5.5 lakh, at Hazir More in Godagari uapzila on Monday.
The arrestee was identified as Azam Uddin, 40, son of late Mozammel Haque of Manikchak area in the upazila.
Tipped off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area around 3:30 pm and arrested him along with the narcotic substance, worth Tk 5.5 lakh, while it was being smuggled in from India, said BGB Nayek Subedar Selim.
A case was filed in this connection.
