BNP to join polls only if neutral govt is in place: Mosharraf

BNP to join polls only if neutral govt is in place: Mosharraf

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will take part in the next general polls only after establishing a neutral election-time government, party standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain has said.
Speaking at a discussion meeting at the Jatiya Press Club, he criticised the ruling party leaders for their comments that the BNP must join the next polls in fear of losing its registration.
“There is no question of cancelling the party registration, as the BNP will join the next general elections after establishing an election-time neutral government,” he said.
“There can be nothing lighter that what some people believe—that the BNP would lose its registration if it failed to go to polls this time…Nobody would have their registration if the BNP did not have it,” he claimed.
The Jatiyatabadi Nagarik Dal, a pro-BNP platform, organised the meeting demanding immediate withdrawal of all cases against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son and party senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.
The former minister said the BNP is legally a democratic party and it believes in a free and fair election. “The BNP is ready to participate in the election anytime if it is held in a free, fair and credible manner,” he said.
He hoped that the BNP would
form the government after clinching
a victory in the next general
elections under the leadership of
the party chairperson and it would ensure justice against all the misdeeds of the government.
The BNP leader alleged that the government wants to weaken the party by resorting to repressive acts, as it fears the party and the people.
He warned the government not to push the country towards an anarchic situation only to protect personal and party interests.
Mosharraf further alleged that the Awami League leaders are carrying out campaigns to demoralise the BNP leaders and activists ahead of the next polls.
He said the government would not be able to convict Khaleda, as the
cases filed against her are “false and fabricated”.
BNP vice-chairman Ahmed Azam Khan and Nipun Roy, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
