Bogra hospital interns continue strike for 3rd day

Fellows at several other hospitals join strike

Interns at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra continued their work abstention for the third consecutive day yesterday, causing suffering to the patients, reports UNB. Besides, several medical colleges and hospital across the country started their work abstention expressing their solidarity with the strike of interns at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra.
Earlier, they went on the strike on Thursday after the Health Ministry suspended four of their fellows for six months over the assault of a patient's relative. The four suspended interns are Dr Nurjahan Binte Islam Naz, Dr Md Ashiquzzaman Asif, Dr Md Kutub Uddin and Dr MA Al Mamun. Talking to UNB, Kutub Uddin, spokesperson of the demonstrating intern doctors, hinted that they would continue their ongoing protest programme until the authorities cancel the suspension order.
The unrest ensued when a group of intern doctors of the hospital beat an attendant of a patient, following an altercation on February 9.
According to hospital sources, Alauddin Sarkar, 60, of Konagati in Sirajganj, was admitted to the hospital at midnight. Soon after his admission, Alauddin's son Rauf locked in an altercation with an intern over switching on the fan.
At one stage of the argument, the intern doctor called his colleagues, took Rauf to a separate room and beat him up.
Later, the agitators locked the emergency unit of the hospital up and went on an indefinite strike, citing that they were insulted by the relatives of Alauddin.
A probe body led by additional secretary Habibur Rahman was formed to investigate the incident on February 23 and the offenders were given punishment following the submission of the probe report.
UNB Sylhet Correspondent adds: interns at different medical colleges and hospitals in Sylhet started their work abstention from Saturday protesting the directives of the Health Ministry that suspended four interns of Bogra hospital for six months over the assault of a patient's relative.
The hospitals include Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital, Northeast Medical College Hospital and Sylhet Women' Medical College Hospital.
Talking to UNB, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Interns Chikitsak Parishad president Dr Mushfikuzzaman said they went on the strike demanding the withdrawal of the punishment of four Bogra interns and security measures for intern doctors. Besides, interns at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barisal also began the strike from the noon. In Rajshahi, intern doctors of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) abstained from work from the morning. The interns formed a human chain in front of RMCH demanding the withdrawal of the punishment of four Bogra interns.
