Hand-fan makers are already getting busy for the upcoming hot season.Local sources said the 130-odd families of Daipara in Dulalmundia, Pariat, and Chashra villages in Kaliganj upazila are producing a large number of fans and supplying those in different districts, earning handsome amounts.Of these, around 60 families live at Daipara in Dulalmundia, 40 at Pariat, and 30 at Chashra village in Jhenidah’s Kaliganj upazila.
Subod, Ashit, and Ram of Daipara village said these fans are sold in large numbers from March to December. From January to February, they collect palm leaves and process them to make fans.
Housewife Suchitra and Komla Rani said they assist their husbands in making the hand-fans. They added that they can earn about Tk. 3,000 to Tk. 5,000 per month and run their families easily.
Sundori, a class-VIII student, said she makes fans every Friday and also on holidays. She stitches a fan for Tk. 1. She can stitch 40 to 50 fans a day and earn Tk. 50 per day, which helps her supplement the cost of her education.
Majnu, Bajlu, and Chanmia of Dulalmundia said that they need only palm leaves, thread, glue, and bamboo slices to make fans. They collect the palm leaves from Faridpur district for Tk. 300 to 400 per 100 pieces.
They dry the leaves in the sun and make the fans.
The production cost of a fan is Tk. 7 to 8 while they sell per piece for Tk. 12 to 15 on the retail market. Wholesale buyers buy these per hundred for Tk. 1,200 to Tk. 1,400.
They added that wholesalers from Sylhet, Dhaka, Feni, Chandpur, Pabna, Natore, Jessore, Chuadanga, Sirajganj, Kushtia, and Meherpur districts buy fans from here and run a good business the whole year.
The hand-fan makers demanded interest-free loans from the government for running a more profitable business.
