Two embassies remove security establishments from footpaths

BSS

The US embassy and Canadian High Commission have freed the footpaths in front of the two foreign missions for pedestrians' smooth movement, reports BSS.
Both the spaces were restricted for pedestrians' movement on security grounds for a long time. The two North American missions freed the footpaths for pedestrians responding to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq's call, said DNCC public relation officer Manzur-e-Mowla.
Earlier on February 28 last month, the DNCC in a letter signed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) asked eight foreign embassies or high commissions-- USA, Italy, Germany, Canada, France, the UK, Australia and Turkey, all located in the Gulshan-Baridhara diplomatic enclave -- in Dhaka to move their security checkpoints from the footpath into their own compounds with a view to freeing up the space for pedestrians.
The US embassy authority removed around 40 big concrete blocks from the footpaths in front of the embassy and set those up on the street adjacent to the footpath in responding the DNCC's request letter, the DNCC PRO said.
Besides, the iron chains which were set up between the concrete blocks, were also removed to free the footpaths for the pedestrians and the Canadian High Commission next door also opened the footpath alongside their building, the PRO Manzur-E-Mowla said.
The DNCC Mayor thanked the authorities of the two foreign missions for taking instant steps responding the corporation's call, he said.
The DNCC's decision to send request letters came in the wake of President of Gulshan society Dr ATM Shamsul Huda, sending an application to the DNCC mayor Annisul Huq on December 15 last year to remove illegal structures from the footpaths of Gulshan area.
In his application, the president of the Gulshan Society mentioned that the High Court Division on February 11 in 2001 in a verdict directed the then undivided Dhaka City Corporation's Mayor to remove illegal establishments from the footpaths of Dhaka city as well as to open those for smooth movement of pedestrians.
