The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested an alleged drug peddler and seized a large amount of contraband yaba tablets from an office of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) in the capital yesterday morning.
The arrestee was identified as Abu Bakar Siddique, who is allegedly involved in drug peddling..
Talking to The Independent, Deputy Commissioner( Wari Division) of DMP Syed Nurul Islam said, “Getting tipped off, a police team led by Officer In-charge Tapan Chandra Shaha of Wari Police Station raided the BTCL office located on the ground floor of Wari Sub-post Office around 8:30am and arrested the drug peddler.”
Later, the team seized about 76,000 pieces of Yaba tablets from his possession, said Nurul Islam.
During a preliminary interrogation, Abu Bakar said he was regularly bringing yaba consignments to the city from Cox’s Bazar. A drug trading syndicate led by BTCL employee M Mostofa receives these shipments and sells these to dealers across the country, he claimed. According to Bakar, the gang was using the BTCL office for drug trading purposes for a long time.
“We are also trying to arrest other members of the syndicate including Mostofa, who managed to flee from the scene sensing the presence of police during the drive,” said the police deputy commissioner.
